South Korea

Korea rewards travelers who look past the standard checklist - the experiences I got the most out of were the ones beyond the obvious sights, and stacking a few of those made the whole trip feel productive rather than just busy. Be ready for the pace, though. The culture moves fast, and that shows up at the table: in many restaurants you're expected to call your order out loud rather than wait to be approached - staff were far more responsive to a quick shout than to being flagged over, though you should always read the room first. Public transport is easy to navigate but can eat a surprising amount of your day, so for tighter schedules I'd lean on a ride-hailing app. And the grilled beef and pork are non-negotiable - that's the meal to build a day around.

Always verify current laws before travel. Laws can change and penalties vary.

Legal

  • Drug laws are very strict. Possession of marijuana or other controlled substances can result in imprisonment of up to 5 years, even for small amounts.
  • Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public spaces, restaurants, bars, and within 10 meters of building entrances. Designated outdoor smoking areas are marked.
  • Photographing military installations is prohibited. Be careful near the DMZ and military bases.

Cultural

  • Removal of shoes is customary prior to entering homes, temples, and some traditional restaurants. Look for shoe racks at the entrance.

Health

  • Tap water is safe to drink in South Korea, though many locals prefer filtered or bottled water.
